Nylon was introduced by DuPont Co. Soon after the cordage companies picked up on the yarn and started making nylon rope. There are many types of construction in Nylon Rope from a small parachute cord, solid braid, 3 strand twisted, 8 plait, double braid, 12 strand, and 6 strand ropes. Sizes range from 1/8” diameter to 6” diameter. Nylon is also used in round slings. There is a standard nylon and one that has a marine overlay finish on the yarn. The overlay finish adds to the tensile strength and wet abrasion.
Nylon ropes are used where strength and stretch is desired. The safety industries use nylon rope because it has a high strength and has stretch to adsorb sudden falls. It is used in webbing and rope.
Nylon rope is used in the marine industry. Applications can range from dock line, anchor lines, windlasses and rub rails on boats. Nylon rope is used for buoys in the ocean that measure waves, water temperature, current, as well as many other uses.
Our company makes nylon rope for many industries. It can be used in commercial fishing, safety nets, general usage, buoy moorings, government, and pleasure boating.
Nylon rope in the double braid construction comes in many colors, we manufacturer using the following colors white, gold/white, blue, red, green, black, gold, hunter green, teal, and navy.
Nylon rope has a UV protector in the yarn and will not be degraded in the sun like some of the other ropes that are made today. There are two types of nylon rope, one is type 6 and the other is type 66. They both have the same characteristics but have different chemical makeup. The companies in the United States make Nylon Type 6.6 and some of the foreign companies make nylon 6.6 but mostly type nylon 6.
New Rope TensileStrengths: New rope tensile strengths are based on tests in accordance with ASTM Test Method D-4268 on new and unused rope in laboratory condition.
Working Loads: Working loads are for rope in good condition with approximate splices, in non-critical applications, under normal service conditions. Working loads should be exceeded only with expert knowledge of conditions and professional estimates of risk. Working loads should be reduced where life, limb, or valuable property is involved, or for exceptional service conditions such as shock loads, sustained loads, etc.
The Cordage Institute specifies that the Safe Working Load of rope shall be determined by dividing the Minimum Tensile Strength by the Safety Factor. Safety factors range from 5 to 12 percent for non-critical uses.
